Construction Projects

The overall objectives of the Boston Water and Sewer Commission (BWSC) are to ensure the delivery of high quality potable water for consumption and fire protection and the efficient collection of sewage for transport and delivery to the Deer Island Treatment Facility. Below are links to the major construction projects around the City that will improve the water and sewer system:

  • Back Bay

This project includes the structural lining of 430 feet of combined sewer and the rehabilitation of 3 manholes in Fairfield Street. Work will be done in two phases and is expected to cause noise, dust, delays and modifications to traffic and parking.

    Anticipated Project duration:

    October 2017 to December 2017
    This project is weather dependent

  • Dudley Square (Roxbury Sewer Separation)

The three-phase Dudley Square project involves upgrading our water and sewer systems and installing new storm drains to separate the stormwater flow from the existing combined sewers. Due to the complexity of the project, traffic detours will be implemented during construction on Dudley Street. Traffic impacts will be a major issue on Blue Hill Avenue under Phase II.

    Anticipated Project duration:

    Phase I - August 2016 to August 2018
Phase II - Project start Fall 2017
Phase III - Project start Fall 2018

  • F Street - South Boston

This project includes replacement of a small section of sewer and two water mains on your street. The sewer work can be slow due to the depth of the sewer being replaced. Water main replacement often requires properties to be placed on temporary water bypass to supply your home with water during construction.

    Anticipated Project duration:

    April 2017 to August 2017
  • Fenway

The scope of the project includes replacement of water mains, storm drains and rehabilitation of sewers and storm drains in two locations: the Fenway and Park Drive. Customers in the project area will be placed on water main bypass if within the limits of the water main replacement. Residents should expect a moratorium on work during the winter of 2017-2018.

    Anticipated Project duration:

    The Fenway - Spring / Summer 2017
Park Drive - Summer 2017 to Summer 2018
  • Hemenway and Gainsborough Streets - Fenway

This project involves the replacement of the water mains and storm drains and the rehabilitation of sewers and storm drains on Hemenway and Gainsborough Streets. Work on this project may continue through the winter, weather dependent.

    Anticipated Project duration:

    Fall 2017 to Fall 2018
  • Longwood

The purpose of this project is to upgrade the water, sewer and drainage systems within Brookline Avenue from Riverway to Fenway. The work under this contract includes the replacement of 3,640 feet of water mains, replacement of 1,355 feet of sewer pipes, rehabilitation of 1,320 feet of sewer and drain pipes, and installation of temporary water by-pass for customers with connection on Brookline Ave.

    Anticipated Project duration:

    Fall 2017 to Fall 2018
  • North End

    North End

This multi-phase project involves the replacement of water mains and the replacement or rehabilitation of sewer and storm drains. This project will improve the water distribution system and upgrade aging sewerage and drainage infrastructure throughout the North End.

    Anticipated Project duration:

    Phase I - Completed December 2015
Phase II - October 2016 to Spring 2018
Phase III - In Design Phase / Projected Start: Summer 2018
Phase IIIA - In Design Phase / Projected Start: Spring 2018
  • South End

This project involves the replacement of water mains and the replacement and rehabilitation of sewers and storm drains in and around Warren Avenue. The project will improve the water distribution system and upgrade aging sewerage and drainage systems in the South End.

    Anticipated Project duration:

    July 2017 to August 2019
  • South Boston Sewer Separation Project

This project involves the sewer separation of 392 acres in South Boston. The impacted area is from Broadway to Andrew Square and the Expressway to Telegraph Hill, and the goal is to remove as much stormwater as possible from the existing combined sewer system. Water main work, where necessary, will occur concurrently, and the project area will be constructed under five construction projects. Working in collaboration with the Boston Planning and Development Agency, the project is currently in the design phase; and construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2019.

    Anticipated Project duration:

Preliminary Design: Spring 2017 to Summer 2018
Final Design: Summer 2018 to Fall 2019
Construction: Fall 2019 to Fall 2026
  • Tremont Street

This project involves the replacement of the combined sewer on Tremont Street from Stuart Street to Boylston Street. Work will be done in three phases and is expected to continue through the winter. Construction impacts include noise, dust, delays and modifications to traffic and parking.

    Anticipated Project duration:

    November 2017 to Spring 2018
